Native plants

Five strands of the same work, with 224 pots of California poppy at the centre.

What it is

A poppy seed grow in 252 square feet, and four other things growing beside it.

California poppy, grown for seed: 224 pots in 252 square feet at Wil's yard. Around it sit milkweed, nigella and yarrow in propagation; a planting guild for a Berkeley street-frontage project; a Logan Labs soil-testing protocol for the orchard rehab client; and an elevation-transect monitoring concept running Berkeley to Grouse Ridge.

The grow is the part with a number on it. Everything else is method and concept — a testing protocol for a client's orchard, a guild drawn for a street frontage, a transect that exists as a line up an elevation gradient and not yet as a set of readings.

It all runs at low intensity. This is not a full-time operation; it is a set of live threads that get hands on them when they need it, in one yard and a few other people's ground.

One practice, two ends. The growing happens here. The selling side has a working name of its own — KOREFALLOW — and a page of its own, and the two are deliberately kept as separate entries in the stack.

Status was logged as a best guess from what the owner described, to be confirmed at review zero.

Five strands

Seed, propagation, planting, soil, and a line up the mountain.

The poppy grow

California poppy for seed — 224 pots in 252 square feet at Wil's yard. The densest, most countable thing in the operation.

Propagation

Milkweed, nigella and yarrow.

The street guild

A planting guild for a Berkeley street-frontage project: plants chosen to sit together in front of a building, not in a bed of their own.

Soil testing

A Logan Labs soil-testing protocol, written for the orchard rehab client.

Elevation transect

A monitoring concept that runs Berkeley to Grouse Ridge — the same observations taken along a climb in elevation.

Where it stands

Ongoing at low intensity.

Two-hundred-and-twenty-four pots in two-hundred-and-fifty-two square feet is a little over a square foot of yard per pot: a seed block, not a display bed. The other four strands are named and not yet measured, which is what an operation at low intensity looks like from the outside.

Threads — Wil, whose yard holds the grow · the Berkeley street-frontage project · the orchard rehab client · Grouse Ridge, the far end of the transect · and KOREFALLOW, the venture name on the other side of the same work.
