What it is

A camera trap that also knows how far away the animal was.

Sticks is a fixed sensor network concept, evolved toward Sierra Nevada wildlife monitoring with automatic camera-trap distance sampling.

Distance sampling needs more than the fact of a detection; it needs the distance to the animal detected. The pod design answers that by being boresighted — the instruments look down one line, so seeing something and ranging it are the same event.

Automatic is the other half of it. The network is fixed: instruments that stay where they are put and sample whatever passes them, with no one in the field to hold the tape.

Nothing is built. What exists is the concept and a pod design settled on paper; the parts named for it are listed at the foot of this page.

The project sits at idea, logged as a best guess from what the owner described, and to be confirmed at review zero. This page says only what the file says — which, at concept stage, is the honest amount.
